All homeward routes start at the former Methodist Church built in 1906 [now High Cross] at the top of Houses Hill hamlet opposite the post box.
They all end at the green lane behind the Beaumont Arms on Church Lane.
Route 1 Part road/part fields
- From High Cross turn down through Houses Hill.
- Continue along the road towards the new development at Whitley Willows.
- Just before a bend take the footpath on the right [sp] and follow the path behind the new housing through a kissing gate into the next field. Continue across two fields to a stile which leads onto a track.
- Turn left down the track and just before it meets the road turn right over a stile [sp]
- Climb up the field with the wall on your left.
- Follow the path along the edge of the next field to meet a stile. Go over and climb the next stile onto the track known at Long Tongue Scrog Lane.
- Turn left here down to the road and then right onto Laneside.
- After the big house known at The Dene turn left along its boundary wall and follow the path into the fields and by the beck.
- Continue following the path through two fields to a gate and stile* onto the green lane. Walk along the lane to the Beaumont Arms.
*sometimes it can be very muddy here so it might be better to stick with the path along the beck and then after reaching the small foot bridge cross the field to arrive in front of the Beaumont Arms
Route 2 Mainly fields
- From High Cross walk along Long Tongue Scrog Lane to the end of the houses.
- Continue downhill from the last house along a sunken path and then up again to where the muddy track gives way to a flagged way.
- At the junction turn left down to Laneside. Turn right onto the road.
- After the big house known at The Dene turn left along its boundary wall and follow the path into the fields and by Ox Field Beck.
- Continue following the path through two fields to a gate and stile* onto the green lane. Walk along the lane to the Beaumont Arms.
*sometimes it can be very muddy here so it might be better to stick with the path along the beck and then after reaching the small foot bridge cross the field to arrive in front of the Beaumont Arms
Route 3 Mainly fields
- From High Cross walk along Long Tongue Scrog Lane and turn right at the first junction.
- Continue forward along the track over a stile at the gate leading to Hagg Farm and past a modern bungalow.
- Continue past the ruined farmhouse upwards following the deeply rutted track as it bends left around the bottom of Hagg Wood.
- Follow the edge of the field until it reaches a gap into the track – Long Tongue Scrog again. Turn left down the hill to meet Laneside at the bottom.
- Turn right onto the road.
- After the big house known at The Dene turn left along its boundary wall and follow the path into the fields and by Ox Field Beck.
- Continue following the path through two fields to a gate and stile* onto the green lane. Walk along the lane to the Beaumont Arms.

Route 4 Mainly fields
- From High Cross walk along Long Tongue Scrog Lane and turn right at the first junction.
- Continue forward along the track. ignore the gate and stile in front of you and go through a gap next to it [sp]. Go straight ahead and follow the edge of the field to a stile in the top left hand corner of the field heading towards the pylon on the horizon.
- Enter the next field and go diagonally right heading for a gateway halfway up the field. Don’t go through this gateway but continue uphill to the gap next to a gate in front of the farm.
- Go through here and turn left. Continue to a stile to enter the field you just left again. Follow the path across another stile which takes you around the top of Hagg Wood.
- At the junction with the driveway turn left and walk down past the terraced houses.
- Just before another house squeeze through the gap next to a gate on your left and follow the path right to reach the track again.
- Turn left down the hill to meet Laneside at the bottom.
- Turn right onto the road.
- After the big house known at The Dene turn left along its boundary wall and follow the path into the fields and by Ox Field Beck.
- Continue following the path through two fields to a gate and stile* onto the green lane. Walk along the lane to the Beaumont Arms.
Route 5 All road – suitable for pushchairs
- From High Cross turn down through Houses Hill.
- Continue along the road past the new development at Whitley Willows to the crossroads at Addle Croft.
- Turn right down here and continue along the road through Gawthorpe Green along the valley side past the cemetery to where it meets the main road up to Kirkheaton.
- Turn left here and continue to the next left – Church Lane and back to the Beaumont Arms.
Route 6 Part road/part fields
- From High Cross turn down through Houses Hill.
- Continue along the road towards the new development at Whitley Willows.
- Just before a bend take the footpath on the right [sp] and follow the path behind the new housing through a kissing gate into the next field.
- Continue forward to the next stile, then follow the hedge and then across the field to access a track via a stile. Tune left and go downhill to the road below. Turn right and continue along the road.
- After the big house known at The Dene turn left along its boundary wall and follow the path into the fields and by Ox Field Beck.
- Continue following the path through two fields to a gate and stile* onto the green lane. Walk along the lane to the Beaumont Arms.
Route 7 Mainly fields and landfill site
- From High Cross walk along Long Tongue Scrog Lane and turn right at the first junction.
- Continue forward along the track. Ignore the gate [Hagg Farm] and stile in front of you and go through a gap next to it [sp]. Go straight ahead and follow the edge of the field to a stile in the top left hand corner of the field heading towards the pylon on the horizon.
- Enter the next field and go diagonally right heading for a gateway halfway up the field. Don’t go through this gateway but continue uphill to the gap next to a gate in front of the farm.
- Go through here and turn left. Continue to a stile to enter the field you just left again. Follow the path across another stile which takes you around the top of Hagg Wood.
- At the junction with the driveway turn left and walk down past the terraced houses.
- Immediately go over the stile on the right into a field. Follow the path through a narrow area out into the next field.
- Follow the line of the chicken coop field to its corner then diagonally left cross the next field to a stile.
- Cross the stile and head down the edge of the next field into the landfill site.
- Continue across the access road down into the little valley. Cross the stream and continue up and across the next field to the signed fenced wide path.
- Continue forward and go over the stride stile onto the path down which follows the the landfill boundary to the road below.
- Turn right and continue along Mountain Way to the end. Cross Stafford Hill Lane and go over the next stile. Follow this path down to the road at Laneside.
- Cross here and continue for about 30 m to the gap on the left. Follow this path through the field to meet the green lane on you right and on to the Beaumont Arms.
Route 8 – Mainly fields and a wood
- Walk down through Houses Hill and follow the road past the new complex at Whitley Willows. Half way up the hill turn right over the stile and cross the field onto Gawthorpe Green Lane [missing out the crossroads]
- Turn right here and continue past Broomfield House. Just after the bend take the footpath to the left [sp] and follow it along the top of the field then across it down to the wood.
- Walk through the wood and exit via a stile into a field.
- Walk up the field keeping to the fencing and go over a stile into the stable yard. Continue forward through a gate onto the road at Gawthorpe.
- Turn left and then almost immediately right [sp] across a field. Go through the gap stile and follow the path diagonally to the next gap and then down to Lascelles Hall Cricket Club access track.
- Cross the track and go over the next stile into the field next to the Club. Continue down this hillside over four stiles and cross the brick bridge. Here turn left and make your way back to the Beaumont Arms either along Ox Field Beck or diagonally across the field to the green lane.
