What is a repair cafe?

A Repair Café is a community event where people bring broken items—such as electronics, clothes, furniture, jewellery etc to be repaired for free by volunteer experts who will also share their expertise with the user to encourage them to tackle similar problems in the future.

These events are designed to reduce waste, save money, and promote sustainability by extending the life of everyday items instead of discarding them. The Repair café fosters a culture of community spirit and promotes a more sustainable world by showing that repair is a better option than replacement. It also preserves traditional repair knowledge and by learning how to repair things rather than throw them away we are helping towards a more sustainable future as well as saving money!

Recycling is good for the planet and good for your budget!

When and where is it?

It is held on the 3rd Saturday of the month   1pm – 4pm

Why a Kirkheaton Repair Café?

Kirkheaton Community Centre is a recycling hub for all sorts of things already from glasses to milk bottle tops so it seems natural to develop it even further. A lot of items which can be mended are thrown away when all they need is a little TLC to get a new lease of life.

Our fixers are all volunteers and offer skills to fix a range of things, so can usually help or advise on what needs doing.

At the moment we are  usually able to repair most of the following

  • Electrical items eg. toasters, printers, phones, coffeemakers, radios, baby alarms etc.
  • Electronics
  • Mechanical items
  • Toys
  • Clothes [not replacement zips]
  • Upcycling clothing, material and fabrics
  • Household items
  • Costume jewellery
  • small items of furniture/wooden things
    However
There are some items that are designed not to be repaired or some items that we don’t feel are safe. So there may be times when we advise not to repair. All repairs are at the discretion of the fixer. Fixers are told “If in doubt DON’T fix it!”
NOTE: Unfortunately we don’t repair microwaves due to health and safety issues
Please ensure all items are in a clean state

Some examples of what the fixers have done

Some of the textile repairs available:

  • Extra holes in belts
  • Stuffed toys & goods
  • Some leather stitching repairs
  • Replacement buttons
  • Some knitwear holes
  • Tears
  • Split seams
  • Hem came down
  • Frayed textiles (clothes, curtains, jeans etc)
  • Zip repairs (can’t replace them)
  • Broken straps
  • Replace cords in trousers & hoodies

Electrical

  • irons
  • toasters
  • breadmakers
  • radios
  • vacuum cleaners etc,etc

We also have a fixer who will sharpen your shears, scissors, knives and secateurs. Due to its popularity please only bring one item or more if you are prepared to join the queue again.

Sometimes we also have a fixer who can do small repairs  on costume jewellery * eg shortening necklace, replacing clasps, mending broken chains .

If in doubt bring  about your item along and our fixers will advise

How does it work?
Just come along to a session. No need to book, but come early and allow time to wait your turn to see one of our fixers.
# On arrival your item will be registered and the repair process explained.
# You will asked to complete a simple form about your item and to read and sign a copy of Kirkheaton Repair Cafe’s [KRP] House Rules -see below
# You will accompany the fixer as they assess and repair your item
# The fixer will then discuss any parts required.

The coffee shop is open for drinks and cakes to keep you going while you wait

# Bring  one item per session so everyone has a chance. However, if you bring another item, be prepared to rejoin the queue after your first item has been dealt with.
# Ensure you have the relevant cables and plugs so the appliance can be fully tested
# If your appliance uses batteries bring some fully charged ones with you

Who are the fixers?
The fixer are volunteers who love seeing their skills put to good use. Some have been professional fixers other are enthusiastic amateurs. They will help figure out if an item can be repaired rather than be binned and suggest ways it can be fixed if they are unable to do it during the session.

 What does it cost?
NOTHING!
– but donations to the centre will help keep us stocked with tools, parts etc

Can I volunteer?
CertainlyWe would welcome new volunteers to act as repair experts and also to work in the cafe.
We are especially looking for people who are handy with:

  • general DIY
  • electrical appliances
  • bicycles
  • furniture/wooden objects
to share their skills with the community

 Repair Cafe policy

The Kirkheaton Repair Café is a small part of a larger movement to empower people to mend broken articles rather than send them to landfill. It has received advice from a number of already well established groups who have shared their expertise and literature. It is run by volunteers and donations are used to finance the running of the Repair Café.
