September sees the first birthday of Yetton Together’s Repair Cafe at Kirkheaton Community Centre. Let’s hope it continues for many years to come. The idea behind the cafe is a simple but effective way  to keep as much as possible of our “stuff” out of landfill by repairing  and reusing it! – For FREE!*

A total of 246 items were seen during the year by our team of fixers since last September . Most of the items were able to be mended  or the owners were given advice on if, and how, they could be repaired. By far the most popular items brought in were electricals eg radios, kettles, toasters, vacs etc. Most just need a simple repair such as a faulty switch or a loose connection or even a new battery! All of our electrical items are PAT tested by a qualified fixer before they leave the centre to ensure they are safe to use. Textiles are another popular repair. Our textile fixer, Bev, will tackle most things [except replacement zips and clothes alterations] She has patched torn clothing, sewn on buttons, turned collars, mended fraying cuffs and fixing existing zips to mention just a few repairs. Next popular was sharpening by John – to date he has sharpened shears, scissors, knives, lopers etc. Other items repaired included s broken coffee table, various toys including a wooden Noah’s Ark and some costume jewellery! Look at the chart below to see a little more detail.

The Repair Cafe is open every third Saturday of the month [except December] from 1pm ’til 4pm. Refreshments are available . The next session is on Saturday 19th September
