Catch them young ! – Encouraging new readers

 

Kirkheaton Library in conjunction with Kirkheaton Primary School, are encouraging children to visit and join their local library.

Over the last few months each year group has visited the library to find out more about what is on offer there. They have had the opportunity to look at our books, and have learned where and how to find different genre of books.  Library volunteer Janet Forde says ‘Getting children into the building is very important as for some this is their first ever visit to a library.  They have discovered that they can borrow books, use a computer, have a quiet space to do their homework and even attend Lego club (which includes them having a biscuit and drink), all for free. We want to get them into the habit of using the library so we also have Reception year children come on a weekly basis to look at books and listen to a story’

Friends of Kirkheaton Library also have story time/craft sessions for the under-fives on Fridays at 2:15pm  (only in term time).
