At the recent Kirklees Recycling Heroes Awards ceremony held at Dewsbury Town Hall, Sue Bowyer, a Yetton Together volunteer, was runner up in the Recycling Heroes category. The awards were jointly presented by the Mayor of Kirklees, Councillors Nosheen Dad and Councillor Munir Ahmed who is responsible for the Environment and Highways portfolio at Kirklees.
Sue was commended for encouraging the local community to recycle by establishing a mini recycling hub at Kirkheaton Community Centre. Here a number of things can be taken to be recycled – small batteries, print cartridges, mobile phones, foreign coins, stamps, clean aluminum foil, empty foil/ plastic pill packets, glasses and the plastic tops from milk bottles etc. All are then delivered to the appropriate places for recycling – the milk bottle top go to Yorkshire Cancer Research who sell them on to a plastics recycling, foil goes for scrap etc.

Sue has also visited the Eco Club at Kirkheaton Primary school to explain how the children there can do their bit for the planet by saving their birthday cards and bottle tops to be recycled.

She also runs the secondhand book case at the Community Centre where visitors can buy donated books for a small fee as well as ensuring any waste generated at the centre is put to good use.
